Mostly about how difficult it is to hold two true things about one person at the same time.
France has always been my team, and Zidane is one of the very few footballers I have felt any real fondness for. Not admiration exactly, but fondness, which is slower and much harder to argue away. I still pull up the two headers against Brazil in 1998, and I still watch the way he moved with the ball, as though he and the ball had come to some private arrangement.

A few days ago I read that Zidane is now coaching France, and I have been thinking about him since.

Which is exactly why I have no interest in softening what he did in 2006.

It was the 110th minute of the World Cup final, the last match he would ever play, and he walked up to Marco Materazzi and put his head into his chest in front of most of the planet. He was sent off. France finished with ten men and lost on penalties. Something was said about his mother or his sister. Nobody has ever fully settled what. The provocation was almost certainly real, but provocation explains a thing without excusing it. He lost his head, walked into precisely the trap the other side had set for him, and left ten men to finish the biggest night of their lives without their captain.

And then he was named the best player of the tournament anyway.

The world had two facts in front of it and could not carry both, so it took the more comfortable one and let the trophy stand. He was the finest player of that tournament. He also disgraced its final. Neither of those makes the other smaller.

What I have never understood is the instinct to defend it. The justifications are always hollow, and they treat a grown man and a captain as somebody who simply could not help himself. He is owed better than that. Holding him responsible is the more respectful position, not the crueller one. His teammates held him to it, and they were the ones who had to play out that final without him.

The opposite instinct is no better. For some, the headbutt is now the only thing Zidane is, an entire career filed under its worst moment. One side can’t stand the offence, so it explains it away. The other can’t stand the greatness, so it pretends it was never there.

None of it costs me the fondness, which is the part people seem least able to believe.

My son is named Zidane, and he was born on the same day as the man himself. He is far too young for any of this. But when he is old enough to ask about the name, I want to give him both halves in the same breath: that the man he is named after played football like nobody else alive, and that he ended his career by losing his temper in front of the entire world, and that neither fact cancels the other.

It doesn’t always wait for middle age- it can come even in the early 20s, once you’ve lived through enough to feel the weight of limits. What once looked like a straight road forward suddenly feels like a wall. The energy that carried you begins to scatter. Anxiety creeps in, and the clear sense of direction you once had seems to blur.
The slump never announces itself loudly. It slips in quietly, almost invisibly. You finish a book and feel no desire to open another. A show ends, and the next feels empty. Even travel, once so alive with promise, turns flat. Joys that used to arrive without effort now feel heavy in your hands. And in that silence, a whisper grows; maybe you’ve lost it, maybe nothing will move you again. Almost everyone passes through this season, though few say it out loud.

And still, life does not wait. The bills must be paid, work delivered, family cared for. Dreams continue to ask for effort even when your spirit is tired. The hard realities of life are not something you can run from- they must be faced. Yet carrying them alone makes the slump heavier, almost unbearable. Somewhere in that struggle, an important truth emerges: resilience isn’t built in isolation.

It often takes the nearness of others to shift the weight. Not in dramatic rescues, but in the smallest of gestures- a laugh that cuts through the fog, a conversation that lingers, the quiet presence of someone who understands without explanation. Community grows in these moments. It doesn’t arrive in one sweep; it weaves itself slowly through shared interests, subcultures, simple kindness, and unexpected connections. It does not erase the slump, but it gives it shape, and with shape comes the strength to live through it.

As a friend told me- if you carry all the weight alone, if you let the slump press on you without release, you risk becoming a burden to the very people you love most. That truth is hard, but it is also freeing. The answer is not to carry everything alone. The answer is to share the weight. To let community renew you so you can return to your family lighter, steadier, and able to give more than you take. What steadies you as an individual steadies them too.

And this is why community matters- not as an afterthought, but as a foundation. Routine may ground you, diverse interests may refresh you, but people restore you. They remind you that meaning has not vanished, only drifted. They make sure the burden does not fall only on your shoulders, or only on your family’s.

The slump is real, but so is the way through it. And the way forward is not to close yourself off, but to open doors, to let your life touch many worlds. The more circles you step into, the harder it is for the slump to keep you still. Because the slump thrives on sameness. And the cure, always, is movement- movement of the body, of the mind, and most of all, of the heart toward others.

Have you ever attended an event and left feeling deeply connected, like you’ve made meaningful friendships rather than just passing through? Creating this sense of community doesn’t happen by chance- it’s something you can deliberately design into your next gathering. Throughout my career, especially during my health research days, I got to work with regression models. I’ve seen firsthand how clearly identifying what works (and what doesn’t) can drastically improve outcomes.

By leveraging regression analysis and mixed models, you can pinpoint key elements that foster genuine connections, creating experiences that leave attendees feeling truly included and engaged.

What Truly Creates Community at Events?

Turning strangers into a connected community involves a mix of predictable and surprising ingredients -

Event Duration - More hours can encourage deeper conversations.

Event Size - Smaller groups foster intimacy, while larger crowds can energize interactions among subgroups.

Activities and Interactivity - Interactive experiences like cooking demos, live music, or workshops encourage meaningful engagement.

Venue Atmosphere - Comfortable, well-lit, open spaces invite guests to linger and converse.

Attendee Similarities - Shared interests or existing friendships quickly strengthen bonds.

External Factors - Weather, local traditions, and competing nearby events influence the overall atmosphere.

Key Metrics Every Event Organizer Should Track

To build stronger community connections, track these detailed metrics -

Duration - Total event length in hours.

Attendance Size - Exact headcount from ticket scans or registrations.

Interactivity - Time (minutes) attendees actively engage in activities.

Vendor Variety - Number and diversity of stalls/vendors (rated 1-5 for local/global mix).

Old to New Vendor Ratio - A balanced mix retains reliability while injecting fresh appeal, encouraging repeat attendance and new connections. (E.g., 60% returning, 40% new)

Venue Quality - Comfort, lighting, and layout rated 1-5.

Demographics - Age ranges, shared interests, and percentage of attendees arriving with friends.

Promotion Effectiveness - Reach and specificity of promotional efforts (e.g., targeted ads).

Weather Conditions - Temperature and weather clarity (e.g., sunny, rainy).

Competitive Local Events - Number of nearby simultaneous events.

Social Capital - Percentage of attendees already acquainted.

Cultural Alignment - How closely the event matches local customs (rated 1-5).

Reciprocity Opportunities - Number of opportunities for mutual interaction (skill exchanges, tastings).

Facilitation Quality - Effectiveness of event hosts or moderators (rated 1-5).

Memorable Experiences - Intensity and frequency of emotionally engaging moments (rated 1-5).

Accessibility - Percentage of attendees with convenient access (e.g., proximity, affordability).

Measuring What Matters: The Power of Regression Analysis

Regression analysis acts like your event’s “recipe checker,” clearly identifying which ingredients contribute most significantly to community-building. For example, asking attendees, “How connected did you feel?” on a 1-5 scale before and after your event provides tangible data. Combined with metrics such as interactive activity duration, vendor interactions, and cultural alignment scores, regression helps quantify exactly which factors, like facilitation quality or vendor diversity, boost community engagement most effectively.

Sample Calculation: A Real-World Example

Imagine you hosted a local market -

Duration: 4 hours

Attendance: 100 people

Vendor Stalls: 5

Interactivity: Rated 3/5

Social Capital: 25% attendees knew others

Cultural Alignment: Rated 4/5

Facilitation Quality: Rated 4/5

Your community survey result: 3.8/5

Using regression:

Community Score = 1.0 + (0.2×Duration) + (0.1×Vendor Stalls) - (0.01×Attendance) + (0.3×Interactivity) + (0.2×Social Capital) + (0.15×Cultural Alignment) + (0.25×Facilitation Quality)

Plugging numbers:

3.8 ≈ 1.0 + 0.8 + 0.5 - 1.0 + 0.9 + 0.05 + 0.6 + 1.0 = 3.85 (accurate with rounding!)

Clearly, interactivity and facilitation emerged as vital elements. Enhancing these factors can significantly boost future community scores.

Diving Deeper: The Advantages of Mixed Models

People experience events differently, and mixed regression models capture these nuanced experiences more effectively. They provide deeper insights by examining subgroups (such as age or location), revealing how factors uniquely influence each segment. For instance, younger attendees might appreciate interactive sessions more than older guests. Mixed models offer tailored insights, ensuring each attendee group feels genuinely engaged and part of your event community.

Why Your Community Score Is a Planning Superpower

A numerical community score provides clarity and actionable insights. Suppose your event scored 3.5/5, highlighting interactivity and facilitation as critical strengths. You can strategically enhance these elements at future events by adding more interactive sessions or training your facilitators, targeting a higher score. Events like Mumbai’s Lil Flea market likely evolved similarly, improving their vibrant community atmosphere over time through targeted adjustments.

Bringing It All Together at Your Next Event

Ready to create truly meaningful connections at your next gathering? Start by focusing on key factors such as event duration, interactive experiences, and skilled facilitation. Capture data through quick surveys (“Did you feel part of a community?”), attendance tracking, and observation. Utilize regression analysis tools to measure clearly what works best. Strategically incorporating these insights- like adding more interactive opportunities and enhancing facilitation- can significantly boost community spirit. Understanding precisely what resonates (and why) allows you to craft events that build genuine connections, one memorable moment at a time.

When you encounter someone struggling, you discover an essential truth: our greatest strength lies not in isolation, but in connection. The network of support that emerges from friends, family, and community becomes the foundation that sustains us. Each compassionate gesture, each moment of understanding, strengthens the invisible threads that bind us together and help us rise above our challenges.

The digital world offers its shallow comforts - curated, validated and non-existent scenarios that can set certain standards - but these pale against the warmth of genuine human care. True resilience comes from authentic relationships and thoughtful preparation for life’s uncertainties. This wisdom reminds us that our most fulfilling existence emerges when we nurture meaningful connections and approach life with both openness and foresight.

In the end, it is not our individual strength alone but our shared human experience that carries us through our darkest moments into light. When life shifts unexpectedly, we discover that we were never meant to face its challenges alone.

After the pandemic, I couldn’t help but wonder how our relationships would change. How would we interact with neighbors, classmates, coworkers, and even family? COVID-19 turned our lives upside down, isolating us from one another.

I was very careful during the pandemic, preventing my family from any type of gatherings or travel, and never did anything against protocol given by the health ministry. Always choosing the option not to step out of home for any purchase, services, or errands. But as the world began to open up again, I felt a strong urge to see how people would reconnect and rebuild their communities from scratch.

This curiosity led me to many discussions, readings, and assumptions. What I discovered in reality, however, was filled with surprises and heartwarming moments.

It all started with a small event in my neighborhood, the Backyard Fest at Verandah Store. Although modest, as I walked through the entrance, I was greeted by the buzz of conversations and the vibrant energy of people reuniting after months of isolation. The air was filled with the scent of baked goods. Laughter echoed through the venue, and a light drizzle added to the charm.

Though I initially felt unprepared for such events, seeing entrepreneurs showcasing their crafts, familiar faces, and families enjoying each other’s company, I realized it was a scene both familiar and extraordinary - a glimpse into how life could return to vibrancy.

As I continued attending various events in different locations, I noticed a pattern. Subcultures that had been dormant were reawakening with renewed vigor. It was as if the pandemic had pressed a reset button, allowing communities to rebuild stronger than before.

In one town, I saw neighbors turning a neglected park into a flourishing community garden. In another, a local market that had nearly shut down was now thriving, thanks to the collective efforts of the community. Each act of revival and resilience was a chapter in a larger story, and I was eager to see where this narrative would lead, particularly in the evolution of communities.

The post-pandemic challenges highlighted the significance of community. Adaptations from the COVID era, like e-commerce, were struggling. Platforms like Clubhouse, which were once a lifeline for social interaction, started to lose their appeal. In small towns, services like grocery delivery were being phased out.

It was a reminder that while pandemic habits might fade, the essence of community, the human connection, was irreplaceable. People found new ways to connect and rebuild, proving that even in adversity, the community spirit could not be extinguished.

Reflecting on this journey, I realize that the lessons from the immediate post-pandemic stages are invaluable. Inclusivity, shared goals, constant engagement, and mutual empowerment are the pillars of strong communities. The mindset of “I win if we win” became common.

The scenes I witnessed, from lively events to rejuvenated parks, testify to the power of coming together. These experiences not only taught us about the resilience of communities but also inspired a renewed sense of hope for the future. The journey of reconnecting and rebuilding is ongoing, and with it, the story of our communities continues to evolve.

My goal is to understand communities from different perspectives, and along the way, I will document my findings here.
